What are the window tinting laws in Colorado?

Window tinting laws vary from state to state, so before you go to the expense of applying any window tinting materials to your vehicle’s windows, we suggest you study the state regulations and local enforcement policies to insure you are in compliance with all applicable laws and standards. In Colorado, daytime temperatures generally stay in the 70s to 90s during the summer, but there are days when the temperature does soar higher. With approximately 300 sunny days every year in Colorado (more than Miami or San Diego), you may want to consider tinting your car windows to help preserve the interior of your vehicle and keep it from becoming a portable sauna.

It is legal to tint your vehicle’s windows in Colorado, provided you follow the guidelines of the Colorado Tint Law. The darkness of window tint is measured by the percentage of visible light that comes through the combination of tint/film and window, known as Visible Light Transmission percentage, or VLT. For windshields, non-reflective window tint is allowed on only the top four inches, and the tint must let in at least 70 percent of light. Front side, rear side, and rear windows or windshields must allow in at least 27% of light. If the back windows allow less than 27% VLT, no tint is allowed on the two front windows. Any percentage of tint is allowed on back side and rear windows if there is no tint on the two front windows.

According to Colorado state law, no metallic or mirrored appearance window tinting is allowed on front windows, side windows, or back windows. It is also illegal to have red colored tint on any of the windows. Dual side mirrors are required to be on your vehicle if you have your back windows tinted. Although it is not required, Colorado state law recommends having stickers on your vehicle to identify it as having legal tinting.
